What Makes A Supplement Worth Taking? Quality, Evidence, And A Food-First Approach

Walk into a supplement store or search online, and you can find thousands of products promising better energy, recovery, muscle, sleep, focus, longevity, or performance.

The harder question is: Which ones are actually worth taking?

That is what I wanted to explore with registered dietitian Grace Evans from Core Med Science as we officially announced the new LOF x Core Med Science partnership.

Grace brings a useful perspective because she has worked on both sides of the supplement conversation.

She has worked directly with athletes.

Now she works with the company that develops and distributes the products.

From Collegiate Sports To The NFL

Grace studied nutritional sciences and completed both undergraduate and graduate-level education in nutrition.

Her early sports-nutrition experience included working with athletes at TCU and eventually joining the nutrition staff.

She later moved into professional football and spent a season working with the New York Jets.

That experience shaped the way she evaluates supplementation.

At high levels of sport, the question is rarely: “What is the trendiest supplement?”

The better questions are:

  • Does it have evidence?
  • Is the dose meaningful?
  • Is the product trustworthy?
  • Is it appropriate for this individual?
  • Does it solve an actual nutritional problem?

Those questions apply to everyday consumers too.

Food First

One of Grace’s strongest points during the conversation was simple: Supplement is literally in the name.

Supplements are meant to supplement your diet.

They are not supposed to compensate for an entire lifestyle that is working against you.

That means we still start with:

  • Adequate calories
  • Protein
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats
  • Fiber
  • Hydration
  • Sleep
  • Movement
  • Recovery

Then we ask: Where are the actual gaps?

Why Supplement Quality Matters

One of the biggest topics in our conversation was third-party quality verification.

Core Med Science emphasizes NSF Certified for Sport® across its performance line.

For competitive athletes, this is especially important because banned-substance contamination can have career consequences.

But quality verification is not only relevant to athletes.

The average consumer should also care whether:

  • The label accurately represents the product
  • The stated dose is actually present
  • Manufacturing standards are consistent
  • Contaminants are being monitored
  • The product comes from a company willing to verify quality

If you are going to spend money on a supplement, you should have confidence that you are actually getting what you paid for.

Creatine: Simple Can Be Effective

Creatine came up early in the conversation because it is one of the supplements both Grace and I tend to view favorably.

Core Med Science’s creatine contains 5 grams of micronized creatine monohydrate per serving. CMS Creatine

The important part may be what it does not try to do.

It does not need an exotic form.

It does not need a complicated proprietary blend.

Creatine monohydrate has a large research base and a long history in sports nutrition.

That creates a useful principle: Novel does not automatically mean better.

Sometimes the boring option has the strongest evidence.

Protein Powder Is Convenience

We also discussed whey protein.

Core Med Science’s whey uses grass-fed whey protein isolate and includes digestive-enzyme systems such as ProHydrolase™ and BioCore®. CMS Whey Protein CMS Whey Protein

But the bigger lesson is not that everyone needs protein powder.

Protein powder is a convenience tool.

If you already meet your protein needs comfortably through food, you may not need it.

But if you are:

  • Traveling
  • Busy
  • Training frequently
  • Struggling to prepare meals
  • Trying to increase protein intake

A portable protein source can reduce friction.

That matters.

Consistency often beats theoretical perfection.

Collagen Is More Than A Beauty Product

Grace identified collagen as one of the supplements people may underestimate.

Collagen is often marketed primarily around skin, hair, and nails.

But connective tissue is a much broader category.

Core Med Science’s collagen formulation contains several targeted collagen peptides, including Tendoforte®, Fortigel® and Peptiplus®, along with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and additional cofactors. CMS Collagen CMS Collagen

That makes the conversation especially relevant to:

  • Active adults
  • Athletes
  • Aging adults
  • People placing regular stress on joints and connective tissue

It also creates another useful lesson: Look beyond the front of the bottle.

Two products may both say “collagen” while containing very different ingredients and doses.

Omega-3s And The Nutrition Gap

Omega-3 supplementation was another major topic.

Core Med Science’s omega-3 formula lists:

  • 2,400 mg total omega-3 fatty acids
  • 1,200 mg EPA
  • 900 mg DHA

per serving. CMS Omega-3 CMS Omega-3

That highlights one of the biggest lessons for shopping for fish oil: Do not only read the total fish-oil number on the front.

Look at the actual amounts of EPA and DHA.

Those are the values that tell you much more about what the product actually provides.

Custom Vitamin Packs And Behavior Change

One of my favorite parts of Core Med Science’s system is not necessarily a new ingredient.

It is convenience.

Their customized daily packs allow someone to combine selected supplements into individually packaged servings.

That matters from a behavior-change perspective.

The perfect supplement plan is worthless if someone forgets to take it.

The easier we can make a useful behavior, the more likely that behavior is to happen.

This is something we talk about constantly at LOF.

Reduce friction around the behavior you want to repeat.

For me, the packs became especially useful while traveling.

Instead of carrying several bottles, I could bring exactly the number of packets I needed.

Simple.

Portable.

Repeatable.

Liposomal Supplements

Grace also introduced another category I wanted to understand better: liposomal delivery.

The basic idea is that certain compounds can be enclosed in lipid-based structures intended to protect or improve delivery through digestion.

Core Med Science uses liposomal delivery in part of its wellness line, including products involving ingredients such as glutathione and vitamin C.

This is also an area where consumers should be careful about broad marketing claims.

“Liposomal” does not automatically mean every product is superior.

The specific ingredient, formulation, dose, and supporting evidence still matter.

Individualized Beats Universal

This may be the most important point from the entire conversation.

There is no universal supplement stack everyone needs.

One person may need additional vitamin D.

Another may already have excellent levels.

One person may rarely eat fish.

Another may consume fatty fish several times per week.

Someone may benefit from greater protein convenience.

Someone else may already meet their needs easily.

That is where:

  • Dietitians
  • Physicians
  • Labs
  • Health history
  • Goals
  • Lifestyle
  • Coaching

all matter.

The LOF Approach

This partnership fits into a broader principle we are developing across LOF:

Information should lead to better behavior.

Our framework remains:

Awareness

What is actually happening?

Intention

What are we trying to improve?

Action

What behavior or intervention makes sense?

Accountability

What happened after we implemented it?

Supplements can exist inside that process.

They should not replace it.
